Fewer blood donors: is there reason for skepticism about the new acceptance teams in Salzburg?

Berchtesgaden – Overall, significantly fewer blood have come to donate in recent months than before the coronal blockade. In 2022, Andreas Seidler and his team of volunteers from the BRK Berchtesgaden Preparation Team recorded a total of 1111 canned goods won, 113 first-time donors and 1205 donors who appeared in the inner district, some of whom are not were then allowed to donate for health reasons.

29 donors for the first time in Berchtesgaden

On the last two dates of November 3 and 4 in Berchtesgaden, 374 donations were collected, of which 29 were first-time donations and 30 were not allowed to donate. »As the Salzburg Red Cross took over blood donation in the whole district this year, there were no donors who previously came to us from the central and northern district because of the Austrians. Nonetheless, the dates here are still very popular, ”says Seidler happily.

Only 96 preserves in Teisendorf

Less happy Edi Schmid, who takes care of the organization of appointments in the central-northern district: »At the last appointment on 27 October at the elementary and middle schools of Teisendorf, our volunteers from the BRK readiness were a bit disappointed: only They arrived 104 blood donors, eight of whom were unable to donate, which is why 96 preserves were collected, which the Salzburg blood donation service was able to take with them to the city of Mozart. In previous years, we could almost always expect an average of 170 donors in the market town, which corresponds to 8.3 percent of the residents. “

The Red Cross regrets the national decline in blood donors and suspects that in addition to the uncertainty of some donors following the harsh conditions during the pandemic, a certain skepticism towards the new Salzburg collection teams in the district may also play a role. north-central. »But for almost 69 years we have been working closely and confidently with our fellow Salzburg Red Cross in the inner district, with every citizen of the district benefiting directly in an emergency if he can quickly go to a clinic in Salzburg or here in the Berchtesgadener Land and easily needs a blood supply. So the blood does not disappear unilaterally somewhere in Austria, but is used in solidarity across the border according to the extent of the need, «explains Schmid. Due to the transition from the blood donation service of the Bavarian Red Cross to the blood donation service in Salzburg, all scheduled appointments in Berchtesgadener Land could take place this year, despite the shortage of skilled labor, without short-term failures and without long journeys from Munich, efficiently and with savings in personnel.

Any healthy person aged 18 up to one day before their 70th birthday can donate blood. First-time donors can donate their blood up to the age of 60. Women can donate four times, men six times within twelve months. There must be a minimum interval of 56 days between two blood donations.

upcoming meetings

The next appointments for blood donation are Tuesday 22 November from 15:00 to 20:00 in the parish hall of Mitterfelden and on Thursday and Friday 1 and 2 December in the parish hall of Sankt Zeno in Reichenhall.

Schmid: »Please come and donate blood and save up to three lives. Just invest an hour in the lives of others; if everyone gives something, then there is always something for everyone. “
