Fertilizers became more expensive when Lithuania considered sanctions: Lukashenko’s regime could have earned how much as a result | Business

The agreement between the Lithuanian Railways and Belaruskalij, a producer of potassium fertilizers in Belarus, is not in the interests of Lithuania’s national security and is therefore no longer valid from 1 February, the government decided on Wednesday.

It is true that the Minister of Transport and Communications Marius Skuodis said on Wednesday that the termination of the contract with Belaruskalij is only one of many details in the entire fertilizer transportation scheme, and there is no guarantee that other companies will not transport fertilizers through Lithuania.

Potassium fertilizers have risen in price twice

Meanwhile, every day that potassium fertilizers move from Belarus through Lithuania to the world means an increasing earning for the Lukashenko regime.

In recent years, the prices of different types of fertilizers on world markets have risen from one to three times. For example, as of December 22 last year. published by the data portal DTN, specializing in agricultural and energy commodity markets, in 2021. At the beginning of the year, a tonne of potassium fertilizer in the world markets cost $ 379 (€ 334).

It is now almost double that at around $ 600-700 (€ 525-613).

“Rising fertilizer prices are linked to strong demand in China and Brazil, higher consumption and low stocks in India and China. There are also supply risks related to the possible impact of the new sanctions on Belaruskalij, which is why the US financial services company Fitch Group has commented on the rise in prices. So how much of this growth could a Belarusian company win if fertilizers moved smoothly?
