Ferris Bueller reunion for charity turns into star-studded tribute to the late, great John Hughes

Artemis Fowl star Josh Gad concluded his Reunited Apart webseries on Sunday by assembling the cast of the critically-acclaimed teen comedy Ferris Bueller’s Day Off from 1986.

But the 45-minute charity special about the class-ditching classic eventually transformed into a full-blown tribute to its director – the late great John Hughes.

Among the topics revisited was the 1961 Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder, which in most scenes was actually a replica shell over a Ford V8 stunt car.

‘There was a very nice Ferrari that we were only allowed to step near,’ Matthew Broderick – who starred as Ferris Bueller – recalled.

‘It was a Ford with a plastic Ferrari glued on top of it.’

Gad was shocked to hear that Broderick injured his knee while shooting the climactic running scene, which hindered his performance during the parade scene.

It was at the Von Steuben Day parade where the choreographer Kenny Ortega originally met Jennifer Grey (who played Jeanie Bueller) before they worked together on Dirty Dancing.

More memories were recounted by Alan Ruck, Mia Sara, Ben Stein, Lyman Ward, and Cindy Pickett – who revealed the two youngest Buellers were entirely cut from the movie.

‘If you look in the kitchen scene, their drawings are still on the refrigerator,’ Pickett – who played the oblivious mother Katie – noted.

‘Kindergarten drawings.’

Josh enlisted superfan Jake Gyllenhaal to ask the ensemble trivia questions where it was revealed that all the vanity plates in the movie referenced past John Hughes films.

Jeffrey Jones as the villainous Principal Ed Rooney

Charlie Sheen as the 'boy in the police station'

Ignored: Noticeably missing from the reunion were troubled duo Jeffrey Jones (as Principal Ed Rooney) and Charlie Sheen, who’ve both since been accused of pedophilia

The Ferris Bueller cast lovingly recalled Hughes who died, age 59, from a heart attack in 2009.

The special concluded with celebs like Molly Ringwald, Andrew McCarthy, and Steve Martin delivering iconic bits of dialogue from their movies with John.

Catherine O’Hara knocked it out of the park with her line – ‘Kevin!’ – and faint from Hughes’ most commerically successful script/producing effort, Home Alone.

The beloved filmmaker never won awards, but he certainly left his mark on the history of cinema and pop culture with a library of memorable, heart-warming movies.

Thus far, the Ferris Bueller special has raised $4,767 for the COVID-19 charity CORE, on top of the $25K donation already made by Barefoot Wine.

It was the sixth and final Reunited Apart webisode after Gad brought back the casts of Ghostbusters, Lord of the Rings, Splash, Back to the Future, and The Goonies.
