Female shooter kills three children and three adults in Nashville school shooting.

On August 5th, 2022, tragedy struck in Nashville, Tennessee as a lone female shooter opened fire at an elementary school, leaving three children and three adults dead. The horrific incident has shattered the peace and safety in the community, leaving residents questioning how such violence could occur in their hometown. The motive behind the shooting remains unknown, but authorities continue to investigate while families in the affected communities mourn their losses. The Nashville school shooting serves as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of gun violence in our country and the urgent need for action to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future.

On Monday, a gunwoman opened fire with two “assault-style” rifles and a pistol, killing three pupils and three adults at The Covenant School in Nashville, Tennessee. The 28-year-old gunwoman, who was from Nashville and is believed to have been a former pupil at the school, was shot dead by police after the violence. The attack is the latest in a series of mass shootings in the US which have left the country increasingly unnerved by bloodshed in schools. The killings occurred as communities around the country reel from school violence, including massacres at a primary school in Uvalde, Texas and a shooting last week in Denver that wounded two administrators.

US President Joe Biden urged Congress to pass his assault weapons ban in the wake of the Nashville shooting. The first lady, Jill Biden, also expressed her condolences, saying: “I am truly without words, and our children deserve better. We stand, all of us, we stand with Nashville in prayer.” The identity of the shooter as a woman came as a surprise to experts on mass shootings, as women make up only about 5-8% of all mass shooters.

The tragedy unfolded over a period of 14 minutes. Police received an initial call about an active gunman at 10:13am, and officers began clearing the ground floor of the school when they heard gunshots coming from the next floor. Two officers from a five-member team opened fire in response, fatally shooting the suspect at 10:27am, according to police spokesman Don Aaron. No police officers were present or assigned to the school at the time of the shooting because it is a church-run school.

Other students at the school were led to safety by police, holding hands as they left their school surrounded by police cars, to a nearby church to be reunited with their parents. Police with rifles, heavy vests and helmets could be seen walking through the school car park and around the grassy perimeter of the building. Helicopter footage also showed officers looking around a wooded area between the campus and a nearby road.

The killings have shocked the local community. Democratic state representative Bob Freeman, whose district includes The Covenant School, called Monday’s shooting an “unimaginable tragedy”. In a statement, he said: “I live around the corner from Covenant and pass by it often. I have friends who attend both church and school there. It tears my heart apart to see this.” Nashville mayor John Cooper tweeted: “In a tragic morning, Nashville joined the dreaded, long list of communities to experience a school shooting. My heart goes out to the families of the victims. Our entire city stands with you.”

The Covenant School was founded as a ministry of Covenant Presbyterian Church in 2001, according to the school’s website. The school is in the affluent Green Hill neighbourhood just south of Nashville, close to the city’s top universities and home to the famed Bluebird Café – a beloved spot for musicians and songwriters. The school has 33 teachers, and its website features the motto “Shepherding Hearts, Empowering Minds, Celebrating Childhood”.
