Federal Minister of Economics Peter Altmaier visits the two semiconductor manufacturers Infineon and Globalfoundries in Dresden on Thursday. The CDU politician wants to find out more about microelectronics as a key technology in the Saxon state capital. Meetings are planned with Globalfoundries Managing Director Tom Caulfield and Infineon Board Member Jochen Hanebeck, among others.
Dresden and the region are among the most important locations for microelectronics in Europe. At the beginning of June, Bosch opened its highly networked and fully digitized semiconductor factory in Dresden, and technology groups such as Vodafone and Jenoptik had recently announced investments. The chip manufacturers Globalfoundries and Infineon also want to expand their production at the location and invest millions.
