FC Barcelona reached an agreement with Ronald Koeman on Monday evening, reports Football International. It therefore seems like a matter of time before the national coach of the Dutch national team is appointed as the trainer of the Catalans.
A delegation from FC Barcelona traveled to the Netherlands on Monday to finalize negotiations with Koeman. Barcelona now only has to pay the lump sum that the KNVB has included in Koeman’s contract.
According to the Spanish Sports world Koeman is going to sign a two-year contract. The former defender is the successor of Quique Setién, who was fired on Monday evening following the blistering 8-2 defeat against Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
It is no secret that Koeman has always wanted to be the coach of Barcelona. The born Zaandammer had a clause in his contract when he was appointed as national coach of Orange in February 2018, so that he could stop at the Dutch national team in the event of interest from Barcelona.
Still unclear about Koeman’s successor at Orange
Koeman’s contract with the KNVB will continue until the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. It is not yet known who the football association has in mind as the new national coach. Koeman succeeded Dick Advocaat at the beginning of 2018.
Under the leadership of Koeman, the Orange squad qualified for the European Championship 2020 after two missed final tournaments (European Championship 2016 and World Cup 2018). The Netherlands also reached the final of the Nations League, which was lost to Portugal in June last year.
For the KNVB, the departure of Koeman is in any case a significant loss, because the football association will soon have to look for a new coach for the Orange women. Last week it was announced that Sarina Wiegman will be the head coach of the England women’s team after the 2021 Olympic Games.
