FBI smashes garbage mafia network in New York

This article is older than a year.

The US Federal Police, the FBI, smashed a garbage mafia network in New York and arrested 30 suspected gang members. Twelve of the suspects were accused of blackmailing and controlling private garbage disposal companies, the Manhattan prosecutor announced yesterday.

17 other people arrested are suspected of extortion, usury of credit and other crimes. The arrest of two other suspects is expected shortly, it said.

The arrested belonged to a US-Italian mafia gang and had nicknames like “Uncle Sonny”, “Papa Smurf” and “Big Bill”. An FBI official said the arrest shows the danger that Mafia families and their accomplices continue to pose.
