Fatal Train Accidents in Czech Republic: One Dead, Nineteen Injured in Four Collisions

The other three accidents today ended without injuries.

Czech Railways experienced one of the worst days in terms of safety. In the space of less than fifteen hours, there were four collisions between cars and trains at railway crossings in four places across the country. The result is one dead and nineteen injured.

After the morning accident at 5:43 a.m. near Dolní Lutyn, accidents occurred in the morning at crossings near Libuna, Rapotic, and in the evening near Ostrožská Nová Ves. Unlike the morning accident, all three other accidents resulted in only material damage and no injuries.

So far, the latest case is the collision of a passenger car with a Stadler GTW unit of Arriva vlaky near Ostrožská Nová Ves in Slovácko. It happened at 20:11. “The accident was avoided without derailment and no injuries, traffic is stopped. The car ended up in a stream,Martin Kavka, spokesman for the Railway Administration, said.

Two accidents then occurred between 10 and 11 a.m. in different parts of the country. At 10:11 a car was shot at a crossing with a České drah passenger train near Libuna on the Hradec Králové – Turnov line. The accident happened at a level crossing without barriers on the third-class road between Podůlší and Zámezí.

Traffic was stopped for almost three hours at 10:26 a.m. on the line from Jihlava to Brno between Kralice nad Oslavou and Rapotice in Třebíčsk. The reason was the same: an accident at the crossing. She also escaped without injury.

The number of accidents at crossings decreased last year after a long time. According to Railway Inspection statistics, there were 158 accidents at crossings last year, compared to 166 a year earlier. 24 people died in them.

Today was an extremely critical day in terms of the total number of tragic accidents on the roads. With seven dead in traffic accidents, today is the most tragic day in almost four and a quarter years. The last time more people died than today, eight, was on November 11, 2019. This is according to monthly statistics on website Traffic Police.

Last year, the daily maximum in traffic accidents was five. Last year, seven days had such a tragic balance, the most recent being November 13. In 2022, a maximum of six people died in crashes in one day, the same as in 2020. Five crash fatalities was the daily high in 2021.
