“Are you foolish, that’s awesome!” – Andy Marek could not hide the emotions and tears before the kick-off of “his” finale. His legendary “Where are the Rapid fans?”
It is probably the absolute rarity that in a football game in the Tipico Bundesliga, the focus is not on the game itself, but on the man who accompanies it. For 57-year-old Andy Marek from Groß-Siegharts in the Waldviertel, the rapid game against WSG Tirol was his 599th home game and at the same time his last – and probably also his hardest. What started in 1992 ended for Marek on Sunday. After a “violent” diagnosis of the disease that Marek had received last autumn, he decided to put his agendas back at Rapid, where he was also the club service manager. Marek is “steeply uphill” with regard to his illness, but the rapid virus seems incurable. The fans thanked “their” Andy not only with a huge banner, but with recurring loud rallies.
Marek will now devote himself to his career as a moderator. His son Lukas, 22, takes over the agendas as a rapid spokesman.
