Falling corona numbers: Lambrecht questions the mask requirement

Status: 06/13/2021 2:56 a.m.

The corona situation has eased significantly recently. Justice Minister Lambrecht therefore calls on the federal states to examine the proportionality of the mask requirement. Denmark could be a model for new rules.

In view of the waning corona pandemic, Federal Minister of Justice Christine Lambrecht has asked the federal states to review the continuation of the mask requirement.

The states would have to clarify “whether and where a mask requirement is still proportionate if the incidence numbers are low and continue to fall,” said the SPD politician of “Bild am Sonntag”. “This also applies to schools, because pupils are particularly affected by the mask requirement.”

Kubicki calls for a complete end to the mask requirement

Bundestag Vice President Wolfgang Kubicki even called for a complete end to the mask requirement. “With a clear incidence below 35, the state may not restrict any basic rights for all citizens. The general mask requirement would therefore have to be lifted if the Infection Protection Act is strictly interpreted, especially outside,” said the FDP politician to the newspaper.

The state governments must now change their ordinances quickly, otherwise they would soon be forced by the administrative courts, said Kubicki. The state should rather set up an information campaign that explains how people in subways and crowds can protect themselves with masks. “The personal responsibility of the people must again become a central component of our coexistence – not the constant specification of rules of conduct by the state.”

Denmark largely removes the mask requirement

In Denmark, the obligation to wear a mask for almost all areas of public life will be lifted from this Monday. The only exception to this is public transport – but only there if you are not sitting.

According to the decision of the Prime Minister’s Conference in January, so-called surgical masks or FFP2 masks should be worn on public transport and when shopping. The implementation of the rule lies with the federal states, regionally further regulations may apply.
