“A major problem when exercising at home is choosing a reliable source or guide of information that, in addition to motivating, has enough knowledge so that training is effective and safe for health,” he shared. “Just as we assume and demand an accredited doctor when we go to the hospital, we should do the same when we seek to improve our health or aesthetics through accredited sports physical trainers or educators,” recommended Pareja.

As for whether the same goals can be achieved with exercises at home, he explained that these can be adapted effectively and achieve weight loss, toning and increased muscle mass. However, there are times when these are executed with additional purposes: “In addition to being aesthetic or healthy, it is a powerful socializer and cathartic, the social and psychological objectives can be more difficult to adapt,” he said.

He also mentioned that Covid-19 pandemic will cause this modality to continue for several months, since one of the most frequent reasons for not practicing exercise was lack of time. “During the confinement, many people found an extra period that they decided to use in this task.”

Regarding exercise monitoring, the specialist stated that presence is associated with greater commitment, while physical practice at home is erroneously related to a higher dropout rate.

Therefore, Pareja urged the population to raise awareness about the practice of physical exercise, since it should not be carried out only as part of leisure, but a health practice with biological benefits that improve the psychological state of the person, and should not be abandoned when school and work activities are resumed.

“The practice of exercise has been related to the prevention of different psychological and psychiatric disorders such as anxiety, depression and mood disorders,” he said.
