Facebook removes racist reports about Kamala Harris

Facebook has removed multiple racist and misogynistic messages about US Vice President-designate Kamala Harris. The company deleted the posts after the BBC reported that the messages were hateful.

It concerns posts, images and comments in three Facebook groups, in which according to the BBC more hateful comments are posted. One of those pages has 4000 members.

The future vice president was accused, among other things, of not being a US citizen. Also, someone wrote that she wouldn’t be “black enough” for the Democratic party. Facebook would not have taken any action against the groups themselves.

Facebook has been repeatedly criticized by human rights groups and advertisers for not doing enough against hateful messages. Decided in August more than a hundred brands are therefore in protest to stop advertising on the platform.

Stereotype

Last summer, Facebook announced that the stereotyped photos and videos of Zwarte Piet and Jews. It has long been prohibited to make comparisons on Facebook and Instagram between, for example, Muslims and pigs, and to depict women as objects.

Harris is the first female vice president in the United States. In her victory speech, she thanked “the generations of women, black women, white, latina, and indigenous women, who have paved the way to this moment in our nation’s history.”
