Facebook is going to add a silent mode to the app that will mute push notifications on the mobile phone, writes the company in a blog post. With the feature, Facebook wants to give users more control over how they spend their time.
Quiet Mode interrupts most push notifications and reminds users to have them enabled when they try to open the app. Users can turn on silent mode manually or through a fixed schedule. They can then indicate between which times and on which days the silent mode should be active.
“As we all adapt to new routines and stay at home, it can be helpful to set limits on how you spend your time online,” writes Facebook. “Whether it’s to help you focus on family and friends, sleep without distractions, or manage how you spend your time at home, we have tools that can help you find the right balance in your Facebook usage.”
When Quiet Mode is enabled, most push notifications are blocked. A number of push notifications are exempted from this. According to Facebook, it is required by law to send some notifications, such as privacy updates, writes The Verge.
When users open the Facebook app when Quiet Mode is enabled, they get a full-screen notification that the feature is active and how long it is active. They can then choose to disable silent mode.
Silent mode is now being rolled out in phases for iOS. Android users will receive the update from May. The feature will be found under ‘Settings and Privacy’ and then ‘Your time on Facebook’.
