Extra police surveillance in Arnhem after dozens of car fires in a short time NOW

Agents who can be deployed as Mobile Units (ME) were present at the Van Speykstraat in Arnhem during the night from Thursday to Friday because of a vehicle that was on fire. It has been unsettled in the city for some time: according to a police spokesman, about twenty similar incidents occurred in the past two weeks.

Since the beginning of this year, the city has regularly experienced car fires. These mainly take place in residential areas, which can lead to dangerous situations, the law enforcement earlier.

For example, a parked car was burned down below an apartment on the IJssellaan in the Presikhaaf district last week. Due to smoke formation, the apartments had to be evacuated. That same night, a mattress, paper container and two parked cars went up in flames elsewhere in the city.

The number of fires has increased in the past two weeks to such an extent that the police are forced to use extra surveillance, including police on horseback. In the coming days, extra surveillance will take place in the Gelderland town.

Police may be investigating links between fires

Mayor Ahmed Marcouch announced on Tuesday that the police are freeing up extra capacity for the investigation. “Fifteen car fires in one week is a worryingly large number, especially in light of the many car fires that have hit us in recent months,” said Marcouch in a letter to the city council.

The police spokesman cannot say whether there is a pyroman. “We are looking for a possible link.” The extra police deployment of the past few days has not yet led to a red flag.
