Exploring Emotions and Dialogue in The Messiah and Current Events

I allow myself the luxury of beginning this column by extracting part of the dialogue from what seems to me to be one of the most emotional moments of The Messiah, a conversation between Cecilia (Amaia, national glory) and Enric (genuflection before Roger Casamajor), which takes place in the Chapter 6, broadcast last week: —What is it like outside? -Alright. —Have you been to New York? —Yes.—And to the ballet?—Also. -And you have a lot of friends? -Many. -Yeah? -Yeah. —Well, be careful, good friends can be counted on the fingers of one hand. —And have they broken your heart? -Many times. —Then you must have fallen in love… —Yes. —And of course, you must have kissed some girls…—A few. —The world must be great.

When I saw it, almost two months ago, it reminded me of that sequence from Entre tinieblas in which Sister Alley Rat (Chus Lampreave) asks her sister what the street is like, convinced that outside the convent life is now different, and she responds: “Those are nun’s fantasies, you are crazy, because since you don’t go on the street, you think that things happen on the street, but nothing happens on the street.” Of course Enric is much more benevolent towards his imprisoned sister.

I watched the episode again a few days ago and I remembered it while watching Escucha, Junqueras, the Salvados program broadcast on Sunday that sat the president of ERC in front of several citizens opposed to the amnesty so that they could exchange positions. What is it like outside? How are we going to know, if we can’t even agree on what is outside or inside the law. I have also thought a lot about it watching the riots in Ferraz. Please return me to my convent. Where are we who are neither there nor here? Come on, things aren’t happening on the street, Sister Rata.
