Experts named the most vulnerable people to HIV

According to Yulia Godunova, director of the EVA Association, the most difficult of all HIV-positive Russians is for pregnant women. They feel most vulnerable during this period, although therapies are now available that minimize the risk of mother-to-child transmission. She voiced her position during a public talk at the site of the MIA “Russia Today”.

“In five cities of Russia, 200 respondents told us that the main factor why they do not continue HIV treatment after childbirth is the lack of family support, as well as the lack of contacts among the HIV-positive community,” Yulia Godunova said, stressing that the development of the institution of equal consultation on HIV infection is a fundamentally important moment.

However, the stigmatization of HIV-positive people in society is gradually decreasing.

As Taisiya Lanyugova, head of the Ostrov patient community (Novosibirsk), noted, “a lot of HIV-infected pregnant women pass through gynecologists and successfully give birth to healthy children.” At the same time, only 15–20 years ago, fear of HIV patients on the part of the gynecologists.

Today HIV has become, in fact, a chronic and well-controlled disease, amenable to effective therapy. Antiretroviral therapy is a cornerstone: according to Daniil Konnov, infectious disease doctor, Ph.D., chief physician of the university clinic H-Clinic, it is she who underlies the strategy to maintain a high quality of life in HIV-infected people.

“In our time, a person with HIV infection is in a condition, not reaching the stage AIDS, calmly live your entire life – exactly as long as it should be from the point of view of biology. Moreover, we are gradually coming to an understanding that a person who takes ARV therapy for a certain period of time ceases to be dangerous for his sexual partners, ”said Daniil Konnov.

He also named the main ways of HIV transmission: in the first place, by a huge margin, is sex (about 60% of new cases in Russia in 2019). At the same time, the expert noted the feminization of this type of infection: more and more new cases are detected in women. In second place is transmission through a shared needle through drug use. On the third – through a blood transfusion. But the transmission of the virus from mother to child accounts for more than 0.5-1% of the total number of new infections.

However, there are still many myths around HIV.

“Patients come to me and admit that they are very worried about their HIV infection: they cannot take their children in their arms, they are afraid to kiss, hug, or bathe them in the bathroom. Separate cutlery, separate towels, and so on are brought in. But all this is unnecessary! This is how HIV is not transmitted. An HIV-infected person can be hugged, kissed, touched with your hands, it is completely safe for you! ” – emphasized the head physician of the H-Clinic.
