The infectologist Alejandro Macias assured in “Por la Mañana” that a r is expectedspike in COVID-19 cases towards the beginning of 2024 in Mexico due to the arrival of the “Pirola” variant, so it is important to get vaccinated. They are available in the country three vaccines: Sputnik, Abdala and Pfizer, but Which is more effective against the new mutation? We explain to you.

The doctor explained that there is evidence that Pfizer is effective for the current variants, so he recommends purchasing it if you have the budget to pay for it at pharmacies, at the Red Cross or at Walmart.

This is because the biological one has “less genetic distance” than the ancestral vaccines that are made from the original virus from Wuhan, China, where the COVID-19 pandemic began.

“It’s no surprise, that’s what we do with influenza vaccines every year, where we never reach the virus because when you give the vaccine the virus has already mutated, but you’re going to get one that looks like the recent viruses,” he said.

Likewise, he commented that although priority should be given to risk groups, such as older adults, pregnant women and people with chronic diseases, he suggested that people who have the budget to pay for the Pfizer vaccine against COVID-19 buy it because will protect them.

So Sputnik and Abdala are not effective against the ‘Pirola’ variant?

If you do not have the budget to purchase a COVID-19 vaccine from Pfizer, then Dr. Alejandro Macías recommended applying Sputnik or Abdala, which are free and can be found in centers and hospitals of the public health system.

These vaccines are safe, millions of people in Russia, Cuba, Venezuela, Nicaragua and even Mexico have used them. There is no evidence that they are not effective, according to the infectious disease specialist. Their “original sin” is that they were produced without proper documentation, which is why the World Health Organization (WHO) has not recognized them.

The specialist mentioned that if these are the vaccines you have access to, you should get either of them because it is important to be protected against the arrival of the “Pirola” variant in Mexico.

In this regard, he stated that COVID-19 infections are expected to increase, because it is easily transmitted, although it is not serious, and it is most likely that “it will make many of us sick.”
