Bisnis.com, JAKARTA – The ambition to produce a Covid-19 vaccine at high speed appears to be contradicting reality. Experts say the world may need to reset expectations about how quickly people can be vaccinated.
Pause in clinical trials to investigate potential safety concerns, slower infection rates in trials, and the inconvenience of authorities recommending vaccines with limited data have added to the lags in estimating vaccine readiness for use.
Anthony Fauci, Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) said that he does not know when the authorities such as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will give the green light for the use of the first vaccine.
Earlier this week, one of Pfizer’s leading vaccine developers revealed that the first interim analysis in phase 3 clinical trials had not been carried out. This means that there haven’t been enough Covid-19 infections among the trial participants to carry out a vaccine analysis.
While a number of other companies have had the opportunity to cross the threshold sooner, Pfizer, which has been one of the most aggressive players in the vaccine race, has yet to produce results. The company originally expected the data to be available in late September.
Reporting from Stat News, Friday (10/30/2020) the company from the United States projects that it can submit an application to the FDA for an emergency use toritasa vaccine developed together with BioNtech in mid-November.
It is important to note that to date, no vaccine developed for the United States market has proven effective in preventing Covid-19 disease. Early clinical trials have shown what appears to be a promising signal; various vaccines have triggered the production of important antibodies in people who have been immunized.
