The Mainfest is one of the oldest and most popular folk festivals in Frankfurt. It takes place every year on the first weekend in August on the banks of the Main, Fahrtor and Römerberg. This year too, visitors can look forward to a colorful program with many attractions from August 4th to 7th, 2023.
Founded in the Middle Ages as a fishing festival, today’s event represents the history and culture of Frankfurt. Whether rides, summer gardens, live music or culinary specialties – here young and old get their money’s worth. Highlights include:
The opening on Friday at 6 p.m. with the serving of wine from the Justice Fountain on the Römerberg, which symbolizes the Main lifeline. Throughout the festival, artists from the region create a great atmosphere on the various live stages. The traditional jousting on Sunday at 4 p.m., in which the participants balance on narrow rowing boats and try to push the opposing team into the water. The competition is an old fisherman’s custom: Originally, the jousting was a struggle between the fishermen for the best places on the fish market. The annual fireworks display will not be missing this year either: on Monday at 10 p.m Let Main shine in all colors.
Arrival by car and public transport
The Mainfest is easily accessible by public transport. The nearest stops are:
Subway and S-Bahn: S1-6, S8, S9 – Station: Main Guard. Due to construction work on the subway tunnel, the Dom/Römer stop is closed during the summer holidays.
Tram lines: 11, 12 and 14 – Station: Römer/Paulskirche
Those arriving by car should use one of the multi-storey car parks in the city centre. According to the city, there are no parking spaces available for the event.
