The corona crisis means that Christmas shopping will be moved from stores to the internet. PostNord is preparing to deliver 40 percent more Christmas packages compared to 2019.
– We are prepared for a completely extraordinary Christmas shopping due to covid-19. At most, we will sort and ship more than 1 million packages in one week. Most will go to our 1,600 delivery points, but up to one hundred thousand packages will be delivered to people’s homes in one week, says communications and marketing director Ole A. Hagen in PostNord Norway.
There are some who start the Christmas shopping at the last minute. This is especially true for men. In a survey conducted by Norstat for PostNord, 15 percent of men state that they wait to buy Christmas gifts online for the last two to three weeks. Thus, they perfectly hit the busiest week before Christmas.
– Do as your wife does: Shop online now, if you are not already up and running, says Hagen.
Higher staffing
Almost 70 percent of women start Christmas shopping online 1-2 months before Christmas. This year, there has been a sharp increase in those who want to avoid the queue at the delivery points, both because it feels uncomfortable and because it reduces the risk of infection.
– We have hired more than 100 new drivers to meet the need for home delivery of packages. We are prepared for a 400 percent increase in some of these services, says Hagen.
PostNord puts the entire organization on full alert in the five busiest weeks before Christmas and rents in extra equipment, more cars and extra staff to handle the increase in online shopping.
– Everyone should get their packages for Christmas, but then they must be ordered in time, and picked up as soon as possible, Hagen says.
