Ex-President d’Estaing dies of complications caused by Covid-19 in France / Article / LSM.lv

In France, on Thursday, December 3, commemorates former President Valery Giscard d’Estaing, who died on Wednesday, December 2, of health complications caused by the coronavirus Covid-19. He was 94 years old.

D’Esten served as President of France from 1974 to 1981. He was a center-right and pro-European politician. During his seven years in power, d’Estaing liberalized the laws on divorce, abortion and contraception. During his presidency, France became a nuclear powerhouse, and the first high-speed trains began to run in the country.

D’Estena played a major role in European integration and in the later formation of the G7.

In the 1981 presidential election, d’Esten lost to the Socialist François Mitterrand.

French President Emmanuel Macron has announced that d’Estaing has modernized France. Macron acknowledged that d’Estaing had a significant influence on French politics and that the political course he had begun is still relevant today.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel believes that “a great European” has been lost when she leaves d’Estaing.

In recent months, d’Esten has been hospitalized several times for heart problems. He died at his family home in the Loire region in the presence of relatives.
