Eventing at the CHIO: World Champion horse is euthanized after an accident

Status: 02.07.2022 6:18 p.m

Tragic accident at the CHIO eventing cross-country ride: The horse Allstar by world champion Rosalind Canter seriously injured and euthanized.

Allstar had not touched down the left front leg in the cross-country course of the Aachen Soers on Saturday (July 2nd, 2022) after a jump that was refused. There hadn’t been a fall, possibly the 17-year-old stallion Allstar hit his leg against an obstacle.

CHIO tournament director Frank Kemperman later brought bad news in an interview with WDR. “Unfortunately, the clinic had to determine that the injury could no longer be operated on. The owners have decided that the horse will be euthanized. This is of course very bad news.”

Allstar have one “Irreparablen Schaden am Krongelenk” suffered, the CHIO said when asked by a sports show. The decision as to whether a horse should be put to sleep is always made by the owner.

Canter: “Many, many people will never forget him”

The 36-year-old British woman Canter reacted emotionally in a message from the CHIO organizer. “There is nothing that can express the love and respect I have for Alby. He was such an integral part of my life and career that many, many people will never forget him.”

With Allstar would have Canter won team and individual gold at the 2018 World Championships in Tryon. Sandra Auffarth won the competition in Aachen after her German teammate Michael Jung was subsequently penalized.

Death also at the Olympics

The cross-country ride of the eventing riders is repeatedly criticized for serious incidents. A horse also had to be euthanized at the Tokyo Olympics in early August 2021.

The 14 year old gelding Jet Set Swiss rider Robin Gondel suffered an irreparable torn ligament over his hoof at a water hazard.

Werth’s horse with blood on its muzzle

A second incident on Saturday in dressage in Aachen. In the middle of her presentation in the Grand Prix Special at the CHIO in Aachen, Isabell Werth was stopped by the judges on Saturday. There was blood on the muzzle of her 12-year-old stallion, Quantaz. According to the rules, Werth had to stop her ride and was disqualified.

The cause was probably harmless, but had serious consequences: Quantaz bit his tongue, Werth said. “Shit happens. If you haven’t experienced everything, you haven’t been there long enough. I’ve had that experience now.” said the 52-year-old from Rheinberg. “It was the first time and hopefully the last time.” Due to the disqualification, the German team missed the chance to win the national ranking. Denmark secured this with Cathrine Dufour at the top.
