Photo: ArchiveChristine Jeske For the 27th time since 1973, the Federal President is calling on students to learn from local and family history through research. Now the young history researchers of all types of schools have until February 28, 2021 to collect historical sources in archives, museums, communities and families and to evaluate them in a contribution. The topic? “Turbulent times. Sport makes company!”. The coordinator for Lower Franconia of the Federal President’s history competition, Jrg Nellen, informed about this in a press release. Lower Franconia is full of exciting historical remains, documents and stories about how sport has shaped us all, said coordinator Nellen in the press release. In Schweinfurt you can follow the biography of football national player Ander Kupfer (inheritance in the Schweinfurt city archive), in Wrzburg you can compare athletics 2500 years ago with today (Attic Gefe of the antiques department of the Martin von Wagner Museum). The Wrzburg local history researcher and city councilor Willi Drrnagel has 225 printed sources in his archive that show how sport moved the city’s society. At the age of 80, he was the oldest gymnast in Germany, the master gardener Heinrich Schmitt (Ebern local museum), who lived in Ebern. Topics of national interest are associated with Lower Franconia: the history of stalking can be explored in Mespelbrunn Castle in Spessart. in Aschaffenburg the story of the German master in stone throwing and javelin throwing, Thomas Dorsch. Carl Diem came from Wrzburg, the inventor of the Reich Youth Games, which became the Federal Youth Games in the Federal Republic. The aim of the Federal President’s history competition is to empower young researchers, after examining historical sources, to adopt an independent, well-founded critical attitude towards our present day. This makes young people strong against the simplifications, seductions and prejudices that are threatening today, especially from the Internet. For teachers who work in accordance with the curriculum and are skills-oriented, there will be a training course on September 23, 2020 from 2 p.m. to 4.30 p.m. in the archive and library of the Diocese of Wrzburg (index archive) on topics, methods and success criteria of the history competition in Lower Franconia: information and registration with Jrg Nellen, Regional coordinator, [email protected] Further information on the Federal President’s history competition can be found at www.geschichtswettbewerb.de.
