They want a provisional date and modalities for reopening event activities.
Event professionals want more visibility for their activities. The sector has indeed been almost completely shut down since the first containment, and they are waiting for a reopening date to be finally set. They propose to do this “to make their contribution to secure compliance with health rules throughout the movement of visitors.”
The president of the CCI, Philippe Valentin, once again asked the State to act in favor of the events sector, which was totally affected, and this, very recently, on two occasions: during a meeting at the Prefecture on January 6, then during a speech during the visit to Lyon, January 8, of the Minister Delegate in charge of Public Accounts, Olivier Dussopt.
The territory of Lyon / Saint-Etienne is the 2nd pole for event activity in France with nearly 18,000 companies having all or part of their activity in this sector. However, this sector has been almost completely stopped since the first confinement with – 80% of turnover in 2020, and a very gloomy 2021 outlook.
Several requests from the CCI for the sector
On behalf of the business leaders of the events sector in our territory, and in conjunction with Unimev, CLE and Event Again, the CCI Lyon Métropole Saint-Etienne Roanne is therefore asking the Government to set, at the end of January, of a provisional date and modalities for reopening event activities, with a suggestion of March 31. “The venues and organizers hosting events are professionals in flow management and security. The strict health protocols that they will implement guarantee a much higher level of health security than other places currently welcoming a large number of people, ”notes the CCI.
“The gauge must also be adapted to each type of place. Indeed, that of 1000 people or 5000 people does not make sense without taking into account the size of the spaces made available as well as their situation. For example, the application of the current directives to a place like Eurexpo is equivalent to 1 person / 150 m²… The current tonnage is arbitrary and we ask that the rule of 4 m 2 per person be applied and that the layout proposed by the place be taken into consideration ”, she adds
She also made requests on the modalities of reopening. According to the CCI, we must “work together to strengthen respect for health rules throughout the movement of visitors”. The actors propose to help identify, in conjunction with local communities and transport actors, good practices aimed at increasing health security upstream and downstream of event venues.
Third request from the CCI, it wants specific aid, such as the possibility of being fully covered by the new exceptional measures taken by the Government for the month of December 2020. It also requests an “increased” solidarity fund, which aims to make all event companies eligible for the new system. Because today, dedicated service providers are not eligible.
The CCI is asking for an extension of existing aid (partial activity, complete exemption from employer social charges since June 2020), until the actual resumption of trade fairs, conferences and exhibitions, i.e. approximately 4 months after the official reopening date.
Finally, the fourth request of the CCI is the creation of a tax incentive (tax credit) on event expenses. The idea is to promote the return of the confidence of advertisers, sponsors and exhibitors who finance a large part of the economic model of events.
In addition, convention centers and exhibition centers are offering to host vaccination centers. They would thus help to accelerate the national vaccination effort given the urgency to act and the skills of flow management (separate entrances), health systems, reception capacities (dedicated spaces, parking spaces) and availability of these spaces.
“To date, the lack of visibility of event and business tourism entrepreneurs, large companies or small structures is total, and their morale is at its lowest: 55% of them say that the vital prognosis of their company is hired at 6 months, ”notes the CCI.
“Our event professionals are fighting to save their business. There is an urgent need to act. The CCI is on all fronts, in direct contact with them as in relay with the State to obtain a prospect of reopening on March 31 and a redefinition of the gauges consistent with the capacity of the places. The survival of businesses, the sustainability of many jobs and the personal tragedies which result from it are at stake ”indicated Philippe Valentin, president of the CCI Lyon Métropole Saint-Etienne Roanne during a meeting with Olivier Dussopt, Minister Delegate to the Minister of the Economy, Finance and Recovery, in charge of Public Accounts, at the Rhône prefecture on Friday 8 January.
