Definition of Evaporation of Water by Leaves
Transpiration is a biological process that plants do. This is the process of removing water vapor from the surface of plant leaves through biochemical and non-chemical processes.
The name Transpiration comes from the word transpiration which is rooted from the Latin words trans and spirare. Trans means “to cross”, while spipare means “to breathe”.
Literally, transpiration itself would mean “the act of breathing”. In biology, transpiration is the process by which plants transport water from the roots to the small pores on the leaves.
Then, the water will evaporate into the atmosphere and turn into water vapor. In addition, transpiration can also mean a conversion of water from liquid to gas as it passes through the stomata of plants.
You can also think of transpiration as the process by which water is evaporated by the leaves of plants. Transpiration will occur invisibly because the size of the water particles is very small.
Temperature, humidity, soil moisture, plant type, and wind will affect the rate of transpiration in plants.
How Does Transpiration Process in Leaves?
Plants perform transpiration to get rid of excess water in their bodies. That is why, transpiration also includes the process of expiration in plants.

Apart from stomata, transpiration can also occur in the cuticle and lenticular. Stomata are small pores on the underside of leaves and act as a place for gas exchange with water vapor.
When transpiration occurs, plants open their stomata to take carbon dioxide from the air for photosynthesis. When stomata are open, transpiration increases and when they are closed, water decreases.
Types of Transpiration
There are at least three types of transpiration according to the location where it occurs, namely sotama lenticular and cuticle.
Stomatal transpiration is a process of water evaporation that occurs in plant stomata. Most of the water from plants is transpired in this way.
This process of evaporation of water by the leaves turns the water into steam and then evaporates when the stomata open.
Then, lenticular transpiration occurs in lenticels, small holes in the bark of branches and twigs. Evaporation of water in these lenticels is absent in all plants. A small amount of water will be lost through this passage.
Lastly cuticle transpiration that occurs in plant cuticles. The cuticle is a waxy layer on the surface of plant leaves. About 5%-10% of the water from the leaves will be lost through cuticle transpiration.
During dry leaf conditions when the stomata are closed, more water will come out through the transpiration process in this part of the cuticle.
