Eurostat: Every third Bulgarian is at risk of poverty

20% of EU citizens are at risk of social exclusion.

In 2020, 96.5 million people in the EU were at risk of poverty or social exclusion, which is 21.9 percent of the bloc’s population, according to Eurostat.

Last year 75.3 Europeans were at risk of poverty, 27.6 million suffered severe material and social deprivation, and 27.1 million lived in households with low intensity of economic activity.

Of the EU’s 96.5 million people at risk of poverty and social exclusion, around 5.9 million (1.3 percent of the total population) lived in households where all three risks were present (poverty, serious material and social deprivation and living in households with low intensity of economic activity).

More than a quarter of the population was at risk of poverty and social exclusion in 4 Member States: Romania (35.8 percent), Bulgaria (33.6 percent), Greece (27.5 percent) and Spain (27 percent), according to available data for 2020.

The lowest proportions of those at risk of poverty and social exclusion were reported in the Czech Republic (11.5 percent), Slovakia (13.8 percent), Slovenia (14.3 percent), the Netherlands (15.8 percent) and Finland (15 , 9 percent).
