Since Friday, Portugal has one more millionaire. The first prize of 67 million euros went to a bettor who spent 2.5 euros and registered the bulletin at the Snack-Bar Juliano, in the city of Faro and, yesterday morning, the joy at the cafe was already very evident.
“They called my son on Friday night to inform him that the winning newsletter had been registered here at our home. I am very pleased to have delivered such a high prize” he told the CM Domingos Juliano, owner of the establishment.
The winning bet was registered on Thursday, as it is a simple and automatic bet. The 71st millionaire in Portugal is still unknown, but it is certain that he will receive much less than the 67 million euros: the stamp duty of 20% for premiums above 5,000 euros gives the state 13.4 million euros.
From Friday’s draw, two third prizes came to Portugal (€ 30,794 each, also subject to stamp duty) and 11 fourth prizes (€ 669). In total, since the EuroMillions arrived in Portugal in 2004, the Portuguese have already won 2,343 million euros in jackpots. The last winner registered the bulletin in a stationery shop in Malveira, in Mafra, and won 100 million euros, in the draw of 17 January this year.
“Portugal is a very lucky country”
Since 2004, 71 first Euromillions prizes have been won in Portugal, something “absolutely fantastic for the dimension that the country has” referred to the CM Maria João Matos, communication director for the Santa Casa Games, who congratulated the winning coffee. “Portugal is a very lucky country,” he said. The bettor has 90 days to claim the prize “upon personal identification” at the Gaming Department of Santa Casa.

million euros is the maximum possible prize to obtain in the Euromillions with the adoption of new rules since 29 January. Until then, the maximum amount possible was 190 million euros. Portugal obtained one of the four 190 million jackpots already delivered: on October 24, 2014, a bettor from Castelo Branco was awarded.

Created in 2004, EuroMillions is played in nine European countries: Portugal, Spain, France, United Kingdom, Ireland, Belgium, Luxembourg, Switzerland and Austria.
805 million euros
EuroMillions sales in 2018 amounted to 805 million euros, which represented a 5.4% drop compared to 2017, according to official data.
