Euge and Edu, the babies born through in vitro fertilization that marked a milestone in San Juan | Cuyo’s diary

On January 28, 1994, with the clock ticking at 11:43, operating room one of the Private Hospital witnessed a historic event in the province: the first birth of twins fertilized in vitro. At that time, it was a true milestone in local medicine.

According to the reports of the time, the couple whose identity was never revealed, had been trying to conceive for more than ten years. Dozens of frustrated treatments, accumulated disappointments and the inevitable struggle between wanting to give up and continuing to fight for the dream. It was in June 1993 that the couple was included in a fertilization program. And what at that point seemed impossible, finally happened.

The pregnancy was very complicated., not only because it was multiple but also because the woman had a fibroid in the uterus. Dr. Carlos Coria was the obstetrician and thus related the situation. “The lady was at rest. She underwent hormonal treatment to retain the pregnancy and was given substances to prevent contractions, which meant a great effort for her, given that she had limited ambulation. Her husband also had an extraordinary participation , which demonstrated union and spiritual strength between the couple”.

Coria was accompanied by a team of professionals who made sure that nothing went wrong, despite the logical nervousness that the situation generated. Silence reigned in the place and was only interrupted by a word to reassure the mother. In this way, after a caesarean section, Eugenio Hernán and Eduardo Ignacio came into the world with 36 weeks of gestation. They weighed 2,340 and 2,350 kilos respectively, so they had to spend time in incubators. However, his health was excellent.

Once the ‘miracle’ was completed, there were tears of emotion, hugs and repeated congratulations from the professionals to the new parents.

A girl, the only precedent in the province

Three years earlier, in 1991, the first test-tube hatching had taken place in San Juan, which was also unprecedented in Cuyo. Although it was a single birth, from which a baby was born.

“It is not a personal achievement but it serves to demonstrate that in the province it can be done without the need to travel to other cities and with the appreciation and affection that we Sanjuaninos give to our patients,” Coria had highlighted then.
