EU Supply Chain Directive: Avoid Bureaucracy and Support for Companies – ÖVP Delegation Leader Speaks Out

Avoid bureaucracy – No general suspicion, but support for companies

Vienna (OTS) – “The fight against forced labor and child labor is undoubtedly important. In principle, it must be the task of every state to use its laws to guarantee that violations of human rights, environmental standards or social rights are avoided and punished. This is now being passed on to companies,” says Angelika Winzig, ÖVP delegation leader in the European Parliament. The EU ambassadors in Brussels today approved the EU Supply Chain Directive. According to reports, ten member states, including Austria, abstained from the vote.

“The fact that so many countries were unable to finally agree to the directive shows how immature the law is. The aim of EU legislation right now must be to avoid any hurdles and additional bureaucracy for European companies and not to build up the mountain of bureaucracy unnecessarily. The fact that SMEs could sometimes be affected is an absolute red line and must be avoided at all costs. We as the ÖVP will continue to represent this position in the European Parliament,” emphasizes Winzig.

“In addition, this proposal will once again create a patchwork of different rules, which will lead to legal uncertainty for companies. It also sets us back as Europe in global competition. All we are now doing with the law is to continue to push companies to move to non-EU countries. That is counterproductive,” explains Winzig and concludes: “Our companies are already doing a lot in the area of due diligence. So let’s not put them under general suspicion, but rather support them in doing the best possible business in Europe.”
