EU Membership Negotiations with Ukraine: Updates on Accession Talks and Progress

According to Ursula von der Leyen, EU membership would be the best step to strengthen Ukraine’s security.

“We have already begun the screening process, there is a lot of work and an extensive schedule. I encourage you to implement the recommendations of the European Commission. And on our part, the European Commission will provide a general framework for negotiations in mid-March,” she emphasized.

Negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the EU

Let us recall that in December, the leaders of the EU member states at a summit in Brussels approved the start of negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the European Union.

In fact, negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the EU have not yet begun, since Ukrainian legislation is currently being screened for compliance with EU requirements, and a negotiation framework is being formed.

The negotiation framework is a technical task covering various aspects of the upcoming EU membership negotiations with a candidate country:

  • stages of negotiations,
  • opening negotiation chapters, which chapters open first, which close last,
  • how progress is assessed and negotiating chapters are closed, etc.

As EU Ambassador to Ukraine Katarina Maternova said in an interview with RBC-Ukraine, negotiations could start in the spring.
