EU links ‘Migra’ agent with El Chapo Guzmán

The US Department of Justice investigates a former Customs and Border Protection (CBP) official as one of the main contacts that facilitated Joaquin’s illegal access El Chapo Guzmán to the territory of that country.

According to an investigation by the US prosecutor’s office in the District of Arizona, to which MILENIO had access, agent José Rosalio Fuentes allowed the passage of the Mexican capo, as well as other drug traffickers and undocumented migrants.

Audios and WhatsApp messages held by the US authorities, which are part of the investigation against Fuentes, reveal that he acknowledged that when he was in charge of the entrance bridge through the Nogales, Arizona area, he let the cartel leader pass from Sinaloa.

According to the sentencing memorandum CR 18-02068-RM-EJM, the border agent’s statements caught the attention of the US judicial authorities, because “it shows a reckless disregard for who and what he was willing to enter the United States in exchange for bribes … the defendant allegedly aided several drug traffickers to enter the United States illegally and even at one point illegally entered El Chapo, former leader of the Sinaloa cartel ”.

The file does not specify the date on which the agent allowed Guzmán Loera to enter illegally.

El Chapo he remained a fugitive from justice until 1993, when his first arrest occurred. Then, in 2001 he managed to escape from prison and remained free until 2014. A year later he escaped again; He was apprehended and extradited in 2017.

José Rosalio Fuentes is currently serving a sentence of 2 and a half years in prison, in addition to that he must also remain 3 years in supervised freedom and pay a fine of $ 6,000.

This sentence was handed down to him after a first case of accepting bribes in exchange for allowing the illegal passage of a man who was wanted by the US justice was confirmed.

The incident occurred on February 10, 2018, when the bribery scheme of the former agent was discovered, who that day allowed Juan Carlos González-Villa, a criminal previously deported to Mexico, to return illegally to the United States.

The security cameras of the border port captured how Fuentes received two men, scanned only the identification of one but allowed the entry of both.

All this led to the former agent being investigated in detail. Thus, it was discovered that he had previously allowed undocumented migrants to enter the United States, many of them flagged for links to drug trafficking.

According to Department of Justice investigations, Fuentes earned approximately $ 4,000 per person.

The authorities detected that the former agent was in negotiations to allow the entry of methamphetamine into the US, although his arrest on October 24, 2018 prevented this from materializing.

In the case of González-Villa, Fuentes pleaded guilty and entered into a collaboration agreement with the United States government, which continues with the investigations into how it facilitated the illegal access of El Chapo.
