Estonian Interior Minister clarifies stance on extraditing military-age men to Ukraine: European Pravda reports

Interior Minister Lauri Läänemets clarified his previous statements regarding the likelihood of military-age men being extradited to Ukraine.

The Estonian minister wrote about this on Facebook, European Pravda reports.

Läänemets noted that his words that Estonia would help Ukraine find draft dodgers were “a little distorted.”

“It is important to clearly emphasize: I, as the Minister of Internal Affairs, or the Estonian state, of course, have no goal to start driving Ukrainian men of mobilization age who live here to the front,” he wrote.

The head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs added that Estonia in no way decides who and when Ukraine decides to mobilize.

“In this regard, the question arises – what would Estonia do in such a situation? On the one hand, Ukrainians are a great support for our economy today… However, the fact remains: these people are still citizens of Ukraine… This means that if the Ukrainian state decides to return them through mobilization, we will have to share information with the Ukrainian state about the people who are here,” Läänemets emphasized.

According to him, if Ukraine turned to Estonia with a request for help in mobilizing Ukrainian citizens living here, “it would be quite difficult for us to refuse.”

“However, it should be said that today we do not have such an opportunity within the framework of international law, which would require a separate agreement between countries or at least a decision at the government level,” the Estonian minister added.

Last week Läänemets said that if necessary Estonia is ready to help Ukraine in mobilizing its citizens if the two countries sign an agreement.

He made the corresponding statement after several German publications published an interview with Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov, in which plans were mentioned conscription of Ukrainians abroad.

Subsequently at the Ministry of Defense clarifiedthat Minister Rustem Umerov calls on all Ukrainians to participate in the Armed Forces, but the question of a mechanism for punishment or legal pressure on men outside of Ukraine is not raised now.
