Escape attempt with hijacked helicopter failed

The Brussels prisons were startled on Friday evening by a helicopter that hovered over the prison in Vorst, among other things. It would be an escape attempt with a hijacked helicopter, but the attempt was unsuccessful.

Three people hijacked a helicopter with a female pilot in Deurne. The three armed men summoned the pilot to fly to the prison of Vorst-Berkendaal. They wanted to land there, perhaps to free prisoners.

“The pilot was ordered to fly to Brussels,” says public prosecutor Kristof Aerts. The helicopter has hovered over the prisons there, including that of Vorst. ‘When a police helicopter appeared, the plane flew away and landed in Hélécine, Walloon Brabant, where the trio fled. The pilot then flew to Melsbroek and landed there. ‘

The Antwerp public prosecutor’s office is investigating the case and confirms the news.

The prison system also confirms that a helicopter has hovered over the prison in Forest. “We have counted the inmates in all prisons and there are no people missing,” said Kathleen Van De Vijver, spokesman for the prison system. “All further activities within the prisons are suspended today.”
