Escalator Panic at Manggarai Station in Jakarta: Passengers Panic and Fall as Escalator Suddenly Turns Around

Jakarta

Startled! Escalator in Manggarai Station suddenly turned around. Para car boy (anker) at a busy station in the South Jakarta area panicked and fell.

These are the moments of the incident that occurred last Wednesday (21/2) afternoon. As is known, the afternoon and evening are busy hours at KRL stations because it is the time to go home from work. Footage of the incident at that moment went viral on internet social media.

It can be seen that the escalator passengers consist of women and men. Most of them carried bags, some just held cellphones in their hands.

The distance between one person and another on this escalator tends to be close together. They all filled the escalator. At the bottom, potential KRL passengers and other types of trains also look full.

Suddenly, the escalator that was supposed to take passengers up to platform 11/12 actually turned downwards. Of course the passengers’ feet were not ready for this surprise.

Panic occurs. Many of them were seen sliding down while holding on railing this escalator. Some of them were seen falling at the bottom of the escalator.

A Manggarai Station officer wearing a highlighter-colored vest was seen helping people who had fallen right in front of his feet. However, two women were seen still trying to climb the stairs in the opposite direction to get to the top floor.

KAI Commuter, the manager of KRL operations, confirmed the incident and temporarily closed the escalator for the safety of its users.

“We apologize for the inconvenience regarding the facilities on one side of the escalator on platform line 11-12 Manggarai Station, after we checked it occurred on February 21 2024, but when the escalator was functioning normally at around 18:00 WIB there were problems,” he said, quoted from official X page @CommuterLine, Thursday (22/2/2024).

“Currently the escalator is closed for the safety of users and we have coordinated with DJKA (Directorate General of Railways) @perkeretaapian for repair efforts. We urge you to remain careful, follow the officers’ directions, and always prioritize safety. Thank you,” he concluded.
