Erdogan’s first visit to Saudi king since Khashoggi assassination Abroad

Erdogan’s visit would be the first since journalist Jamal Khashoggi was murdered in 2018 at the Saudi embassy in Istanbul. Khashoggi was critical of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman al-Saud and was killed when he came to the embassy to collect papers for his wedding to his Turkish fiancée.

The crown prince would have approved the murder, but was never punished for it. The issue led to great friction between the two countries. The crown prince’s security guards, who were captured only later, are said to be in a luxurious ‘prison’ with catering.

“He expects me in February. He has made me a promise and I will visit Saudi Arabia in February,” Erdogan said when asked by a Turkish businesswoman who wanted to know about the export of Turkish products to Saudi Arabia. Earlier, President Erdogan and King Salman had already called each other.

Erdogan is in trouble with the Turkish lira. Inflation was much higher in December than a month earlier.
