"Mutasinya itu yang akan mempengaruhi, dia (virus) hidup di orang. Dia hidup di orang-orang yang berbeda pasti gampang bermutasi, makanan orang itu berbeda, kemudian antibiotiknya berbeda, antivirusnya berbeda, pasti akan bermutasi," kata Yunis.
Karena virus menyesuaikan diri dengan kondisi manusia dan lingkungan, maka mutasi virus terjadi dan memungkinkan munculnya varian baru COVID-19. Hal yang sama dikemukakan epidemiolog Universitas Andalas, Defriman Djafri, yang juga Dekan Fakultas Kesehatan Masyarakat Universitas Andalas.
Defriman mengatakan virus membutuhkan inang untuk dapat bereplikasi dan berkembang biak. Dalam kasus COVID-19, virus SARS-CoV-2 sebagai agen penyakit COVID-19, inangnya adalah manusia sebagai penjamu dan lingkungan sebagai pendukung interaksi inang. Virus tersebut bermutasi untuk bisa beradaptasi dengan kondisi manusia dan lingkungan sehingga bisa bertahan hidup.
