Environment: Kaiserslautern is a role model when it comes to climate protection

Environment chief Peter Kiefer receives award in Berlin.

Kaiserslautern – The city of Kaiserslautern was honored yesterday along with 21 other municipalities for their exemplary climate protection efforts in Berlin. The award went to the Parliamentary State Secretary in the Federal Environment Ministry, Rita Schwarzelühr-Sutter. Since 2016, all municipalities have received funding through the “Masterplan 100% Climate Protection” funding program of the National Climate Protection Initiative with the aim of reducing their greenhouse gas emissions by 95 percent by 2050 compared to 1990 and halving final energy consumption in the same period.

According to Schwarzelühr-Sutter, the master plan municipalities are role models for how climate protection can be successful on site. This helps to improve the quality of life in the areas and to become a regional growth and value creation engine. Climate protection management could also be set up permanently in the administrations. “That also applies to Kaiserslautern. We are delighted that we can work continuously with the position of climate protection manager on the implementation of the goals, ”emphasizes Alderman Peter Kiefer.

According to Kiefer, one of the most important measures in Kaiserslautern on the way to becoming a zero-emission city is the expansion of photovoltaics for a climate-neutral power supply. Another field of action is the conversion of the urban fleet to electric vehicles. By the year 2050, many other areas have to be tackled in order to achieve climate neutrality. “The master plan is an important basis for action for us,” Kiefer is convinced.

In addition to the city of Kaiserslautern, the state capitals Kiel, Magdeburg, Mainz, Potsdam and Stuttgart, the cities of Beckum, Emden, Münster and Rietberg, the districts of Cochem-Zell, Gießen, Lüchow-Dannenberg and Oberallgäu, the district of Lippe, the district alliance of Hameln- Pyrmont, Schaumburg and Holzminden, the Flensburg region, the regional association for the greater Braunschweig area, the university and Hanseatic city of Greifswald, the Flecken Steyerberg,
and the municipalities of Birkenfeld and Sprendlingen-Gensingen.

The “Masterplan 100% Climate Protection” funding program is a municipal flagship initiative of the National Climate Protection Initiative for municipalities that are characterized by exemplary commitment to climate protection. The basis of the process is a master plan for climate protection drawn up by the municipality together with master plan managers, in which potentials are recorded and measures for all climate-relevant sectors of the municipality are formulated. The climate protection measures will be implemented gradually depending on the respective framework conditions.
