BEIJINGHuawei confirmed the end of its partnership with the makers German camera Leica in May 2022. However, Leica will work with Xiaomi on camera technology in its phones, starting with the Xiaomi 12S series.

After collaborating with Leica, Huawei has formed its own imaging brand for smartphones called Xmage. “This is a condensation of our past innovations in the imaging field and our commitment to future exploration of the imaging field,” Huawei wrote in a Weibo post quoted by SINDOnews from the androidauthority page, Tuesday (5/7/2022).

Huawei’s future phones will carry the Xmage logo. It’s unclear which device will get the new imaging technology first, but the Mate 50 isn’t out yet and could be a perfect contender for it.

Huawei said Xmage will focus on new technical innovations in the smartphone camera space, improving the shooting experience, and keeping up with imaging trends. All of that sounds pretty cryptic, though, as we’ll have to wait and see what the new platform will look like once it appears on Huawei phones.

That said, Chinese smartphone makers have always been at the forefront of the camera field. Despite the US ban, the Huawei P50 Pro delivers a fantastic camera experience.

Over the past few years, Huawei has achieved several feats in imaging thanks to its switch to a larger RYYB sensor, a solid periscope camera, AI features like reflection removal, impressive HDR processing, and more. Of course the presence of the new Xmage is still awaited to see what platforms are offered.
