Emmen deliberately still has some Black Petes, in many talking points | St. Nicholas

Different Pieten can be seen all over the country

Just as there was disagreement in Emmen this week about whether or not to Zwarte Piet, so was the case in many places across the country. There is probably no country or city where there has not been discussion as to whether Zwarte Piet was held or not. But some places are faster on this than others.

In Woerden (Utrecht) only in 2024 will all Pieten be painted with soot stains. In De Lier in South Holland, all Pieten are still black. Culemborg has canceled entry. Black Petes and Soot would both be seen there, but as the discussion has flared up too much, the entry won’t take place this year.

In Alphen aan den Rijn (South Holland) only snow plows can be seen for the first time this year. In Venlo there would first be a transition phase with gray Petes. But after a protest from KOZP, the city of Limburg decided to only have snowplows accompany Sinterklaas.

Is this a party for all kids or a party for white kids only?

Jerry Afriyie, Kick Out Team Leader Zwarte Piet

The organization of the arrival in Emmen says they have “understanding” for Kick Out Zwarte Piet. “But that’s a line we’ve used to not change everything at once. We get a lot of positive reactions. Many people also say: There’s something for everyone,” says Meijer.

For Afriyie this is unpleasant. “Is this a party for all kids or a party just for white kids? If it’s a party for all kids, it’s up to us adults to give an interpretation that makes all kids feel happy. That’s all we ask “.
