Elisa Longo Borghini is missing this month at the World Cycling Championships in Glasgow, Scotland. The Italian champion is still suffering from a skin infection on the top of her left thigh, which she contracted during the Tour de France Femmes.
The 31-year-old Longo Borghini had to stop fighting last Saturday before the seventh stage. At that time she was in fourth place in the overall standings.
It is now clear that the Lidl-Trek rider has not recovered sufficiently to play a significant role at the World Cup. She is in bed with a fever and is on antibiotics.
“This is a heavy blow,” said Longo Borghini on the website. “At this point in the season the last thing I wanted to stop is but my health is a priority. Giving up the World Cup is painful, but also the only choice I had.”
The women’s road race is on Sunday, August 13. Demi Vollering, who won the Tour de France Femmes on Sunday, is one of the big favorites for the victory.
