The Egyptian army says 11 soldiers have been killed in a battle with terrorists in the Sinai desert. At least five soldiers were also injured.
The exact circumstances are unclear. According to the army, it came to a clash at a water pumping station, which is said to have been attacked by armed terrorists. No information has been released about casualties on the part of the opponents.
It is the deadliest attack on Egyptian soldiers in years. No group has yet claimed responsibility. A branch of the Islamic terrorist organization al-Qaida is active in the area.
This group is held responsible for numerous attacks on the army, dissenting Muslims and Christians. After an army campaign in 2018, the number of attacks dropped dramatically.
