Electric Volkswagens in Miraculous: The Magical Ladybug and the Black Cat Animated Film

Electric Volkswagens starred in an upcoming animated film for children. There would be nothing strange about it if the main character of the story did not drive in a car that does not exist yet.

In the animated film “Miraculous: The Magical Ladybug and the Black Cat”, which is to appear in cinemas and on the streaming platform Netflix during the summer, several electric models from Wolfsburg appear: We see the bus ID.Buzz, ID.4, but also the upcoming liftback ID.7, which is to go on sale in the fall.

But the main character of the film, the magical ladybug, earned the most attention. Unlike the other figures, she rides in an electric Beetle, which the automaker has so far kept quiet about.

Volkswagen issued a press release for the film, in which it writes that as a series, Miraculous has become a phenomenon that children in 130 countries around the world have fallen for. The film, which according to the series has now been created, is to be screened in more than a hundred countries around the planet.

“Electromobility is cool and exciting, which fits perfectly with the story of the film and its characters. We are excited that the popular characters can live out their adventures in the electric cars of our ID family,” the report quotes the head of the marketing department of Volkswagen, Nelly Kennedy.

The fact that the Beetle could continue in an electric form has been talked about since 2012. At that time, Volkswagen presented the E-Bugster study, which was a then-produced Beetle with an open body converted into an electric car.

The original pre-war Beetle got its modern form in 1997, when it went to the first customers with the English name New Beetle and a Golf chassis. At that time, he started the era of retro cars, which was later followed by the British car manufacturer MINI. The New Beetle also saw a second generation – but only with the name Beetle -, but production ended definitively in 2019.

In Europe, the modern Beetle was never very successful, perhaps because its first generation set an exorbitant price. The main market became the United States, where, on the contrary, it belonged to important models. In addition, the car company regularly fed the interest of local motorists with limited editions in strange color combinations, which did not reach the Europeans at all.

The former head of the Volkswagen Group, Herbert Diess, was also convinced that Volkswagen needs to offer more emotions to customers in the USA. As a big promoter of ID.Buzz, he saw in ID.Beetle an opportunity to extract from Volkswagen the most interesting part of its history.

However, the new head of the Volkswagen brand Thomas Schäfer in a message to his employees a few days ago ordered savings. According to him, Volkswagen’s “roof is on fire” and this is said to be the “last wake-up call” for possible changes. He sees savings primarily in trimming the model range and reducing costs.

When journalists from the magazine Auto Motor und Sport approached Schäfer about the appearance of the ID.Beetle in a children’s film, the head of the brand, expectedly under the weight of the new situation, explained to them that the Beetle, like the Scirocco model, had passed its time. “ID.Beetle will not be for now,” cites the article his words.

“Thomas Schäfer takes away the hope of the fans,” the editors of the magazine commented on his statement. But at the same time, they noticed that the word “for now” appeared in the carefully worded sentence.
