Electric car registrations explode with 8.2% market share in January

As a result of major movements in the automotive sector at the start of 2020, electric car registrations jumped in France, going from only 2% of market share in January 2019 to 8.2% last month.

With 10,952 units in January 2020 compared to 3,059 in January 2019, according to the Committee of French Automobile Manufacturers (CCFA), registrations of electric passenger cars (passenger cars) experienced a leap in France at the start of the year, in a plunging automotive market (-13.4%).

It is not certain that this trend will be confirmed throughout the year, this increase being partially artificial. Indeed, with the target of 95 g of CO2 / km set by the European Union for the automotive sector, and the fines which threaten manufacturers from 2020 before the deadline of 2021, certain brands have voluntarily filled their stocks by registering their most polluting models at the end of 2019. Conversely, manufacturers could have postponed deliveries of their electric cars so that their registrations are counted in their 2020 balance sheet. In addition, the new scale of the ecological penalty in France has pushed certain customers place an order as quickly as possible in order to be delivered before its application on January 1st. The French automobile market had also seen a 27.7% increase in registrations in December compared to 2018 (+ 21.6% after the correction of working days applied).

Renault Zoé reigns supreme in electric vehicles

If the increase in electric car registrations in France is therefore partially artificial, it remains encouraging. For passenger cars, the registrations for the Renault Zoé almost reach those of its thermal counterpart with 5,331 units compared to 5,524 for the fifth generation Clio (966 for the Clio IV), which seems to be having a difficult start against a 208 II registered at 9,463 copies. As a result, the Renault Zoé, the first sale of electric cars in France, is on the third step of the podium for passenger vehicle registrations, all energies combined. The latest evolution of the electric city car of the rhombus, named Zoé Z.E. 50, therefore seems to have a good commercial start, which should be compared to that of the Peugeot e-208.
