Elections 2020 | Opposition leaders gathered for beer, drawing the coalition into “big” elections

Around 5 pm, when the results of the regional and senate elections were already known, three leaders of opposition parties met in a restaurant in the center of Prague: Petr Fiala from the ODS, Markéta Pekarová Adamová from TOP 09 and Marian Jurečka from KDU-ČSL.

“Our meeting is not surprising. We have come a long way in the elections and we still have a long way to go, “laughed Fiala and indicated that the parties would like to agree on a joint coalition for the parliamentary elections next year. “You can count on it. It looks good.”

We watched the election day online:

This is how Fiala understands the result of the just-concluded election: “They have strengthened opposition forces and weakened the government camp. It is clear that the bet on the coalition has paid off. And people have a great chance to make this change next year. “

The three parties have now tried it together in different regions and in different combinations.

The ODS succeeded with the People’s Party in the Karlovy Vary and Ústí nad Labem regions. ODS and TOP 09 again scored points in the Moravian-Silesian and Pilsen regions, where they will probably have a governor. And the pair TOP 09 and the People’s Party tried it again in the South Bohemian and Olomouc regions.

“We cooperated not only in the regional elections, but also in the senate elections, and we verified that the voters appreciate it. It worked perfectly, we were on the crate somewhere. That is why it is natural that we wanted to meet and congratulate ourselves on beer, “says the chairwoman of TOP 09 Pekarová Adamová.

It is thus increasingly likely that the trio will also go to parliamentary elections in one conservative bloc of the ODS, TOP 09 and KDU-ČSL. The joint leader of this coalition and the candidate for the prime minister will be Petr Fiala. If they really agree on everything, the parties would like to announce a joint electoral coalition by the end of the year.

The leader of the People’s Party, Marian Jurečka, originally wanted to lead the KDU-ČSL into the elections independently, but two things changed his opinion – on the one hand, most of the other members of the party’s leadership are in favor of joining others. And then weak preferences also raise concerns that the People’s Party may not be able to enter the House on their own.

“The current result is a signal from voters, we should transform it into negotiations on parliamentary elections,” Jurečka realizes.

Above all, the ODS also cared a lot about the Mayors joining the three in the coalition. However, the movement led by MP Vít Rakušan preferred the Pirates, with whom it is currently negotiating a joint liberal coalition for the 2021 parliamentary elections. The five current opposition parties could thus be formed into two blocs.
