Egyptian dancer sentenced to three years in prison for “indecent acts” – Observer

The Economic Crimes Tribunal of Cairo, Egypt, on Saturday sentenced a dancer to three years in prison and a fine of $ 18,000 for “indecent acts” when posting photos and videos on social media.

According to the Spanish news agency EFE, belly dancer Sama el Masry, 42, was accused by the prosecutor of “committing indecent acts in public”, “inciting prostitution” and “violating family values ​​of Egyptian society ”.

El Masry was sentenced by the court to three years in prison and to pay a fine of 300,000 Egyptian pounds ($ 18,563) for “attacking public morale” after posting photos and videos on her social networks.

The dancer was arrested on April 24 and the authorities seized three mobile phones and a laptop computer after the Public Ministry received “numerous complaints” about the content that the artist had published on her social networks, according to the official version. .

According to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the dancer denied the allegations she was targeted and claimed that the images were published after her cell phone was stolen in June 2019.

In recent months, Egyptian authorities have detained several artists and influencers accused of “attacking public morality”.
