Egyptian Businessman Naguib Sawiris Mocks Arrest of Merchant with Foreign Currencies

Dubai United Arab Emirates (CNN)– On Sunday, the Egyptian businessman, Naguib Sawiris, responded in a sarcastic way to a post stating that a merchant in Egypt was imprisoned, in possession of a number of dollars and 2,000 Saudi riyals, amid interaction.

A piece of news published in an Egyptian newspaper said, “The Public Prosecution in Nasr City, east of Cairo, decided to imprison a merchant for 4 days pending investigation. He was in possession of 240 US dollars and 2,000 Saudi riyals (about 533 dollars), accusing him of trading in foreign currencies on the black market.”

Commenting on the news, Naguib Sawiris previously wrote on his official account on the “X” platform, Twitter, saying: “Nono’s merchant is at the beginning of the journey…they are crying hard…”

Naguib Sawiris’s comment came in response to an Egyptian academic commenting on the same news, saying with astonishment: “Merchant?!!!!!!!!!”

The Egyptian businessman interacted with a user on the “X” platform, and she said: “If someone thinks about withdrawing dollars from the bank because a traveler might arrest him!? Lol!”

Sawiris replied to her, saying: “Oh, even if he has no dollars at all…”

The Egyptian Ministry of Interior published several news over the past few days through its official account on the “X” platform, confirming its success in directing security strikes on a number of foreign currency traders on the black market, in an attempt to control the price of the dollar against the Egyptian pound.

At the same time, the Egyptian Ministry of Interior wrote on its account via “X” on Sunday: “We denied the validity of what was reported by one of the channels affiliated with the terrorist Brotherhood group regarding the security services arresting a representative of a shipping company from inside a bank in Alexandria for possessing foreign currencies.”

The ministry added: “This comes within the framework of the terrorist Brotherhood’s desperate attempts to spread rumors and fabricate lies, after it lost its credibility among public opinion.”
