Egypt, model and photographer arrested for a shoot at the Pyramids- Corriere.it

In the cell for a photo shoot considered disrespectful. It happens in Egypt, where police arrested (and then released on bail) model Salma al-Shimi and photographer Houssam Mohammed after a shooting at Djoser’s step pyramid outside Cairo.

Dressed in clothes reminiscent of the era of the pharaohs and which wink at the character of Cleopatra, Salma al-Shimi posed in front of the pyramid of Saqaara. The photographs spread by al-Shimi herself on Instagram – her account has thousands of followers – sparked a flurry of comments. Between those who said they were scandalized by the skimpy clothes and the lack of respect for a place considered sacred and those instead – like the American journalist and activist of Egyptian origin Mona Eltahawy – recalled the muscle parade of shirtless soldiers wanted by General Al Sisi accusing the regime of double standards, Egypt divided. But above all, the police decided to arrest the two, accused of taking photos without authorization in the archaeological site, and the debate resumed, while the images of the service were removed from social networks.

The arrest sparked anger and indignation among those users who had seen the photos on social media. Is there really a ban on taking photographs in archaeological areas, even images that are not indecent but completely normal? someone asked on Twitter. A few hours after the arrest, the authorities decided to release the two upon payment of a deposit of 500 Egyptian pounds (32 dollars).. But both are awaiting the results of the investigation.

The story comes later that five young women were sentenced by a court to two years in prison and a fine of 300,000 Egyptian pounds (19,000 dollars) for their videos on TikTok, deemed harmful to public morals. Also in December 2018, images of a naked couple embracing at the top of the Great Pyramid of Cheops sparked a media outcry. At the time, the authorities had arrested a camel owner and a young female guide for helping the couple access the site.
