TAURANGA – Czech squash players took ninth place at the World Team Championship in New Zealand. In the final match, they beat Hong Kong 2:1 and improved their previous record in the championship by 12 places. Egypt defended the title after defeating England in the final.
Daniel Mekbib lost the opening match, the Czechs then equalized after a scratch in the second match. Viktor Byrtus and Tsz Kwan Lau collided at the beginning of the third set, the Czech representative could not continue due to a calf injury, and the referees awarded him the win due to the opponent’s fault.
The decision was made by Jakub Solnický, who went through the tournament undefeated. “I really enjoyed the last match, I like decisive and exciting battles. I had a great time playing. We all gave our best performance in the championship. I dare to say that such a result will not be repeated.” said Solnický in a press release.
Squash will be a new Olympic sport
After the historic success, coach Ondrej Uherka reminded that squash will be an Olympic sport in Los Angeles in five years. “I believe that our players have a great chance to see there. Five years is a long time and I hope that with this result we managed to inspire the coming generations,” said the coach.
Egypt won the sixth gold from the World Cup. Mohamed and Marwan Elshorbagy, who participated in two Egyptian titles in the past, played for England in the final.
