EES System Implementation at EU Borders: Changes for Ukrainian Citizens and More

The EES system will operate at the entrance to 29 EU and Schengen countries, including Romania and Bulgaria.

A new system should be operational at EU borders this autumn. entry-exit EES. It could significantly change the procedure for crossing the border with the European Union and Schengen countries, including for Ukrainian citizens. However, there are many nuances.

This is stated in ZN.UA material.

Entry procedure

When crossing the EU border within the visa-free zone or with short-term visas, biometric data will be provided at the entrance. At the same time, border guards will no longer put entry and exit stamps on passports. To obtain EU biometrics, it is planned to install special self-service kiosks where travelers can scan their fingers and face.

The European Commission noted that this will create an additional delay at the border of about 40 seconds, but this should be offset by time savings at other stages of control.

The EES system will apply at entry into the 29 EU and Schengen countries, including Romania and Bulgaria, which previously had slightly different rules for entry, as well as Norway, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Iceland, which are not EU members. Everything will remain as it was outside the new system, we are talking, in particular, about Cyprus and Ireland.

In addition, the EES will have a publicly available online service that will replace the Schengen calculator and will allow visa-free travelers to find out how many unused days they have left in the Schengen area. This service will also work for travelers with short-term visas.

What the EES system will simplify

The system should make life easier for passenger carriers, who will have limited access to the EES database and will be able to check passengers’ visas. In addition, it should eliminate misunderstandings between passengers and carriers.

End of delay

Another advantage of the EES system is to come legally (visa-free, tourist visa, etc.) and stay after the period of authorized stay has expired (for example, 90 days within the visa-free period or visa period).

Also, the Ukrainian border may be particularly sensitive to potential delays for truck drivers, whose movement is already significantly slowed down.

Let us remind you that they will tighten the rules for Ukrainians EU entry rulessome parts of the system will start working at the end of 2024.
