Edwin Rodrigo Castro de la Parra drowns to save a woman

  • Drowned immigrant: Edwin Rodrigo Castro de la Parra later died after jumping to rescue a woman in the Rio Grande
  • The woman was pregnant and trying to cross into the United States
  • The Guatemalan immigrant lived in a refugee camp in Matamoros and was waiting for asylum

Edwin Rodrigo Castro de la Parra sacrificed his own life to save a pregnant woman from drowning at the border.

Edwin Rodrigo Castro, 20, was an immigrant from Guatemala who was waiting in a refugee camp in Matamoros, Mexico, for his asylum hearing to enter the United States.

A jovial boy, with a frank smile, a lean body, with a life full of illusion and hope. But the fury of nature killed him.

On Tuesday, August 18, the boy died when he jumped into the turbulent waters of the Rio Grande to save a pregnant woman, who tried to cross to the other side and was swept away by the current.

The woman who tried to cross was with another group of people, who despaired and made the decision to enter the promising future without calculating the risks.

Edwin Rodrigo Castro saved the woman by bringing her to the shore, but he was so tired that it was him who was pulled by the current.

One more tragedy like many others of the hundreds of immigrants, maybe thousands, trying to cross the border between the two countries.

The story now being told is a puzzle of various narratives made by MundoHispánico by phone, by other immigrants and activists who are in the same refugee camp where Castro de la Parra lived with his family. Many waiting just to have a better life in America.
